Matthew Wolfenden has spoken about the difficult split from his former Emmerdale co-star Charley Webb. The couple married in 2018 and share three sons. After 15 years together, Webb ended the relationship in 2023 and moved in with friend Sheridan Smith. Wolfenden said the decision was not his and it took a toll on him.
Co-parenting and support
The pair have found a rhythm for co-parenting, relying on the support of their parents, whom Wolfenden described as very patient. He quit his role as David Metcalfe after the split and joined Hollyoaks as Jonah, with a two-hour commute. His new partner Heather Scott-Martin also helps with childcare.
Wolfenden told The Sun: 'I’m often around and when I’m around I can help Charley out. When she’s around, she can help me out.'
Difficult times
Speaking previously about the divorce, Wolfenden said it was Webb's decision to separate. 'It was hard, it was a hard time for me. I had the kids full time at that time because Charley was out on tour and then out of the blue I got this news that she wanted to separate. It was a very very tough time.' He added that the children were quite young, which was a concern, but they had to move onwards.
Advice for parents
Wolfenden and Webb have a rule for their boys Buster, 16, Bowie, 10, and Ace, 6. He said: 'You do just have to learn a lot as you go. It’s all new. I think everyone’s different, so you’ve got to create your own path.' He stressed the most important thing is to think of the children: 'As long as they’re happy and thriving, then I think you’ve done a good job.' He noted that the younger two look up to Buster.
