Matt Willis defends Emma amid Strictly host backlash

Matt Willis has defended his wife Emma against fan backlash after she took on one of the biggest roles in British TV, becoming one of three Strictly Come Dancing hosts. The Busted singer, 43, spoke about his wife on This Morning on Thursday 8 October while promoting his new memoir.

Matt Willis praises Emma's performance

Asked about Emma, who he also presents Love Is Blind with, Matt said: "I love working with Emma, she's so good at what she does. I've never watched so much Strictly in my life, I'm at every live show. She's smashing it, she's so happy."

This Morning hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard then asked him about negative comments from Strictly fans. Since Emma and her co-hosts, Josh Widdicombe and Johannes Radebe, took over as the presenters of the celebrity dance show, they have received a sour reaction from the show's loyal audience.

Matt's response to critics

Matt responded: "She doesn't pay attention to anything, she's very good at doing her job. She just puts her head down, does her job the best she can. She loves working with Josh and Jojo and they're great and they're brilliant and they're lovely people and they're just in all of this together."

Ben then asked if Matt would be joining the show as a contestant anytime soon. Matt joked: "I've been asked to do Strictly a couple of times but I've got a valid reason not to now. I think it would be a bit of a conflict of interest."

Josh Widdicombe's social media post

This comes after Josh Widdicombe addressed his Strictly performance on social media. Josh took to Instagram on Monday evening to share a clip from Saturday night's show. The video featured Shirley Ballas pulling out her mini shoes, much to the exasperation of her fellow judges. She had captioned it: "Actual footage of me and my tiny shoes annoying my fellow judges for a full 39 seconds." Resharing the clip, Josh simply wrote: "Iconic."

Previously, Josh had said he was "pulling up the drawbridge" on his social media usage. Speaking to Rob Beckett on their podcast, Parenting Hell, he said: "I'm back on the brick. You've inspired me and I'm loving the brick again. It's mad that we've reached this space in time where we have to buy a second phone because we're being dragged into these apps."

Strictly Come Dancing continues at 6.15pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
