Matt Willis Recalls Darkest Addiction Struggle While Emma Was Away Filming
Matt Willis' Darkest Addiction Struggle During Emma's Absence

Matt Willis' Tearful Plea for Help During Darkest Addiction Chapter

Busted musician Matt Willis has bravely detailed the most harrowing period of his long-standing battle with addiction, a time he describes as his absolute darkest, which occurred while his wife, television presenter Emma Willis, was away filming abroad. The 42-year-old star, who has been transparent about his on-off struggles with alcohol and drugs for years, revealed that this particular episode left him genuinely fearing for his life and his marriage.

A Descent into Isolation and Fear

Speaking candidly on his personal podcast, On The Mend, Matt explained that the crisis unfolded approximately two months before his 2008 wedding to Emma. "Emma was away, she was filming a show in Mexico I believe, she went away for two weeks," he recalled. "And that two weeks that she was away, I was the worst I've ever been. I was drinking 24/7."

During this isolated period, Matt would lock himself away at home, venturing out only to secure more alcohol. He emphasised the grim reality, stating, "It was the darkest it's ever been, there was nothing social about it, there was nothing glamorous about it." Overwhelmed by fear, he confessed to being terrified he was going to die, leading to a desperate, tearful phone call to his drugs counsellor in the middle of the night.

A Stranger's Intervention and the Path to Rehab

In a moment of raw vulnerability, Matt shared, "I was really scared and down and crying my eyes out and I said, 'I don't want this anymore, please help me'." His counsellor arranged for him to enter a rehabilitation centre in Bournemouth the following day. However, in a tragic twist, after his tour manager dropped him off, Matt immediately fled to a nearby off-licence, purchased several cans of cider, and drank them, ultimately passing out on the street.

His salvation came from an unexpected source. A stranger found him unconscious and, recognising the signs of severe addiction, helped him. "He picked me up and put my arm around his shoulder and he basically carried me to the door of [the rehab centre]," Matt recounted. Remarkably, this man was a former graduate of the very programme Matt was meant to enter. "He dropped me off at the door and I never saw him again, but the reason I walked through that door is because he took me there."

Recovery, Marriage, and Lasting Sobriety

Thankfully, this intervention proved pivotal. Matt committed to the professional help offered and managed to become clean in time for his wedding to Emma later that year. While he later experienced a significant relapse that tested their marriage, the couple persevered, working through the challenge together. Matt has consistently praised Emma for her unwavering support throughout his journey and has also credited becoming a father to their three children as a profound motivator for change.

Today, Matt Willis celebrates a major personal victory: eight years of continuous sobriety. Marking this milestone last summer, he shared a heartfelt message with his supporters: "Thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey so far. I’ve got some big plans for the next couple of years… let’s see how far we can go." His story stands as a powerful testament to the struggles of addiction and the possibility of redemption through support, intervention, and personal determination.
