Martin Freeman and his new wife, Rachel Benaissa, made a public appearance together on Thursday night after secretly tying the knot.
The Sherlock star, 55, and the actress, 32, attended the gala performance of Derren Brown: Only Human at the Apollo Theatre in London on October 22. Benaissa wore a colourful knitted jumper as she was pictured with Freeman, wearing a grey jacket and red scarf.
Previous Relationship and Public Appearances
The Office star was previously in a 16-year relationship with his Sherlock co-star Amanda Abbington. The pair played John and Mary Watson alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC detective drama, before separating in 2016. Abbington previously said long periods spent apart while filming had contributed to the breakdown of their relationship.
Freeman and Benaissa attended the A Long Winter Gala during the BFI London Film Festival earlier this month. Abbington has since become engaged to escapologist Jonathan Goodwin, 43, who uses a wheelchair after a stunt went wrong while filming America's Got Talent: Extreme in 2021.
Rare Insights into Their Relationship
Freeman has largely kept his relationship with Benaissa out of the spotlight, but offered a rare insight into their life together during an appearance on Jessie and Lennie Ware's Table Manners podcast last year. Speaking about Benaissa's love of food and wine, he said: “She’s not a Cordon Bleu… she’s a massive cheese and wine w****.” He added: “That’s what she would say about herself.”
Freeman also made rare comments about his family life during an appearance on The Jonathan Ross Show, recalling a visit to a Sherlock-themed escape room with his family. "It did take us a while," he revealed. "I went with my other half and my two kids… I'm aware it did feel a little bit twattish to go to my own thing, but my kids said it was going to be fun."
Family Life and Recent Videos
After comedian Romesh Ranganathan questioned why he went, Freeman joked: "My voice is in it… I hadn't seen or heard myself enough in that week!"
The couple have been together for around six years following his split from Abbington, who previously shared that they remain on good terms despite the initial difficulty of their breakup. A video posted to TikTok by Freeman's daughter Grace shows Benaissa dancing along to 'She's The Brightest Star' from his hit festive film Nativity! alongside Joe and the family's dachshunds.
