Mariah Carey encountered significant technical difficulties during a New Year's Eve performance in Brisbane, Australia. The singer struggled with audio problems that prevented her from hearing herself through her earpiece monitor.
In response, Carey ad-libbed lyrics for three minutes, singing: 'These might not be the best lyrics I ever wrote, but whatcha gonna do? I'm in a dress that's a little bit small and little bit big and my shoes my shoes my shoes…' She also complained to the sound crew, saying: 'There's like 200 of you, can one of you just fix the ear thing? I hope I'm not asking for the moon and the stars.'
Carey's set, which opened with 'Can't Take That Away' from her 1999 album 'Rainbow', was preceded by numerous warm-up acts. She took 'rest breaks' between songs and was reportedly out of breath throughout the performance, according to News.com.au.
Later, Carey was joined on stage by her husband Nick Cannon and their twin children, Moroccan and Monroe, whom she introduced as 'special visitors'. The singer has recently been announced as a judge on American Idol, a role reportedly worth $18 million, with the series starting on January 16.
