Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Testaments Episode 10.
Fans of The Testaments almost missed a major guest appearance in the Season 1 finale. The sequel to The Handmaid's Tale has finally dropped its tenth episode, and with it came some surprises. Picking up from last week's instalment, the episode dives back into Becka Grove's (played by Mattea Conforti) scandal.
As viewers will recall, Becka brutally killed her father after learning he had been abusing her friends during dentist appointments. She was subsequently taken away by The Eyes and locked in a mystery facility. In the opening scenes of the finale, Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) pays Becka a visit and is escorted by a female guard played by the legendary Margaret Atwood.
In the brief scene, Atwood's character tells Lydia, "don't agitate her," before walking off screen. Many fans instantly recognised Atwood as the story's author, but others did not place her at all.
Taking to Facebook, one fan wrote: "Also did anyone else peep the Margaret Atwood cameo?" with a second replying: "Yes! I did catch Margaret's cameo... it was perfection." Reddit users also spotted the novelist, with one posting: "I literally screamed 'MARGARET ATWOOD!!!' and my husband in the other room said 'cameo, then?'"
However, some viewers completely missed the Easter egg. "Ooo wait what part was it? I don't know what she looks like," said one. Yet another fan exclaimed: "I missed it! Where was she???" If you also did not spot Atwood's guest appearance, you will find it at around five minutes into Episode 10.
Although it comes as a shock to viewers, the Canadian author had already teased her cameo before the series premiere. "I have a cameo in ['The Testaments'], though I can't say as what, except that it's scowly," she revealed on her website. The rest of the cast had kept it under wraps, but Conforti admitted she was quite star-struck to meet the author in real life.
"I was a big Margaret Atwood fan before I met her," Conforti told Woman and Home. She continued: "I was excited to meet her, and speak with her about the world we were building that she created. She is just such an intelligent and strong woman, and you can just feel that aura when you're around her and you can just feel that presence when you step into a room that she's in."
