Marcus Rashford's former teacher has given an insight into what the England player is like off the pitch. The 28-year-old started playing football as a young child, joining the Manchester United academy system at age seven. He made his Premier League debut at 18 in February 2016. Since then, he has been a standout player, scoring a goal against Croatia in this year's World Cup match that saw England win 4-2.
Teachers Share Memories of Rashford's School Days
Ahead of England's match against Congo on July 1, BBC Breakfast visited Wythenshawe, where Rashford attended primary school. Former teachers revealed what he was like as a pupil. Lucy Birchall said: 'I taught Marcus when he was in year four. He was a really lovely boy, very genuine, down to earth. Everybody was always commenting about how fabulous he was with his football. We're all hoping that he can bring it home for us!'
Students Inspired by Rashford's Success
Current students at the school shared their excitement about attending the same school as a famous footballer. One child described it as 'very exciting,' while another praised him for achieving his goal of becoming a professional footballer. Chris Thomas added: 'He's never changed and when he has been back to see us, he's just as he always is. Still calls me miss! He's very respectful. The kids love it because obviously he's a hero to them and he's somebody they look up to and respect.'
Rashford's Connection to His Roots
One teacher told the BBC that Rashford often returns to the school, making them feel that the place he attended is important to him, as it was his foundation and starting point for his love of football. She explained: 'His dream started here on this playground, and his dream of himself in an England shirt, getting out there and representing his country for football. It's all about inspiring children to think that they can go on and do something amazing.' Another boy called Rashford a 'good player,' and another added: 'He's proved to everyone that if you believe that you can, you will.'
BBC Breakfast is available on BBC One weekdays from 6am.
