American actress and singer Mandy Moore has revealed her family home in Altadena, California was destroyed by devastating wildfires in January, yet she maintains an attitude of "overwhelming gratitude" for her life and loved ones.
Family Resilience Amid Tragedy
The This Is Us star - who shares three young children with husband Taylor Goldsmith - reflected on the challenging year while marking Thanksgiving with heartfelt family photos. "It's been a pretty wild and difficult year but the top line is definitely overwhelming gratitude," Moore wrote in her social media post.
The 41-year-old actress, mother to four-year-old Gus, three-year-old Ozzie, and 14-month-old Louise, specifically highlighted her appreciation for her immediate family, adding: "Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. The most grateful for these 4."
Mother-in-Law Becomes "Silver Lining"
In a touching tribute from July, Moore praised her mother-in-law Kathy Goldsmith as the unexpected blessing emerging from the tragedy. The wildfires that destroyed Moore's property were part of a larger disaster that damaged or destroyed over 16,000 structures across Southern California, forcing thousands to evacuate.
"It's been a hell of a year and my Mother-in-law, Kathy, has risen to the occasion in every way," Moore shared on what happened to be Kathy's birthday. "Selfishly, I'm not sure what I would have done without her in the hours, days, weeks, and months since the fire."
Moore described how the family's five-minute walk to Kathy's house was no longer possible after the fires, but they found solace living together for six months following the disaster. "If there's any silver lining in this whole thing, she's definitely ours," the actress emotionally noted.
Rebuilding Life After Loss
The actress heaped praise on Kathy for mastering childcare for her three grandchildren and becoming an integral part of their daily routine. From morning coffee to evening tea after the children's bedtime, Kathy provided crucial support as the family processed their grief together.
Moore humorously insisted her mother-in-law wouldn't be moving out anytime soon, despite Kathy's plans to find new accommodation. "She thinks she can move into her new place but that's not happening. Ha!" the actress joked in her birthday tribute.
Looking toward the future, Moore has expressed optimism about rebuilding her family home while continuing to navigate life after the conclusion of her acclaimed television series This Is Us, which ended in May 2022 after six successful seasons.
The actress previously admitted feeling daunted by moving on from the beloved show, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "Quite frankly, nothing will probably mean the same thing to the world in the way that that job did." Despite these professional concerns, Moore's current focus remains firmly on family recovery and gratitude amid personal tragedy.
