Gene Long, a 33-year-old construction worker from Florida, woke up just over an hour after his parents turned off his life support, baffling doctors who had given him a one per cent chance of survival. His family had already signed papers for organ donation and begun funeral arrangements.
Sudden Awakening After Coma
Long had been in a two-month coma following a seizure caused by a blood sugar spike to 1,900—normal levels are around 100. He had been battling severe diabetes, addiction to meth and fentanyl, and homelessness. When he opened his eyes, 30 family members were in the room to say goodbye. “As I couldn’t talk when I first woke up, I just sat there and smiled. They were in total shock,” he said.
Vision of the Afterlife
Long recalls that after falling and hitting his head, he found himself walking on a “sea of energy.” He described it as an ocean of every colour, made of living light. “I didn’t remember ever being on Earth; I thought I had always been in this place.” He then encountered a figure of light resembling his late grandfather, which he identified as the Holy Spirit. “When I saw him, I was struck by the most powerful love I have ever felt in my entire life. It was beyond human language.”
Medical Miracles
Doctors had warned that if Long woke, he would never walk or talk again. His kidneys, liver, and brain were failing, and he was full of infection. Yet upon awakening, his organs recovered without dialysis, and his diabetes went into remission—no longer requiring insulin five times a day. “It’s extremely rare for this to happen,” he noted.
Life After Death
Since the experience, Long has been free from drug addiction, without withdrawal symptoms. He now shares his story to inspire others. “The void I once tried to fill with drugs was now full of love. Death isn’t the end. And what feels like home is closer than people think.”
