Manchester United have a history of signing free agents, with varying degrees of success. From Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen to World Cup winner Laurent Blanc, the club has often turned to the free market to bolster its squad without significant financial outlay. As the summer transfer window opens following the expiration of contracts on June 30, manager Michael Carrick may again explore this route.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic: A Free Agent Triumph
One of the most notable free agent signings in United's history is Zlatan Ibrahimovic in 2016. The Swedish striker announced his arrival himself on social media, stating, "Time to let the world know. My next destination is Manchester United." United later confirmed the move, with Ibrahimovic claiming he felt justified in announcing it before the club due to his larger Instagram following.
Reunited with manager Jose Mourinho, whom he had played under at Inter Milan, Ibrahimovic was handed the number nine shirt. At 34, he joined after his Paris Saint-Germain contract expired. He made 46 appearances across all competitions, scoring 28 goals and helping United win the League Cup and Europa League in the 2016/17 season. Despite injuries the following campaign, Ibrahimovic enjoyed his time in England, telling ESPN, "I had fun, I'm happy I played for United, which I think is the best team in England." He retired in 2023 with over 450 career goals.
Laurent Blanc: From Criticism to Title Winner
Sir Alex Ferguson had pursued Laurent Blanc since 1996, finally signing the World Cup and Euro 2000 winner in August 2001 as a free agent to replace Jaap Stam. At 35, Blanc struggled initially, with United suffering five league defeats by December, drawing heavy criticism from fans. However, his form improved, and he earned a one-year contract extension. In his second season, Blanc helped United reclaim the Premier League title before retiring.
Victor Valdes: A Free Agent Flop
Not all free agent signings succeeded. In January 2015, United signed Barcelona legend Victor Valdes as backup to David De Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper, recovering from a knee injury, had been without a club for months before signing an 18-month deal. Valdes had won six La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues at Barcelona and knew manager Louis van Gaal from his time there.
Valdes made his debut in May 2015, but the relationship soured when he was left off the pre-season tour of the United States the following summer. Reports indicated he refused to play for the Under-21 team, leading to his transfer listing. He made only two appearances for United before joining Standard Liege on loan in January 2016 and later Middlesbrough on a free transfer.
Looking Ahead
As Carrick prepares for the summer transfer window, United may once again test the free agent market. The club's history shows that such signings can yield high rewards but also carry risks.
