Ryan Sims, a 31-year-old man from Frampton Cotterell, South Gloucestershire, saw his life dramatically altered after a drink-driving incident in January 2025. He crashed his Ford Focus into a traffic island on the A476 at Crosskeys, Caerphilly county, and was later found to have 123mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood—well above the legal limit of 80mg.
Crash and Immediate Aftermath
Prosecutor Jemma Guy told Newport magistrates' court that police were called to the scene on January 22, where they found Sims with a cut to his head. He declined an ambulance but was taken to Cwmbran's Grange hospital due to his injury from the airbag deployment. A blood sample confirmed he was over the limit.
Sims pleaded guilty to drink-driving. His solicitor, Rod Young, explained that Sims had been working for a recruitment agency in Newport and living in Blackwood. On the day of the incident, the office closed early, and he went for drinks with colleagues. At around 4:30pm, he decided to drive home, believing he was fit to do so. Poor weather and darkness contributed to the crash, as his nearside wheel struck a raised kerb, causing him to lose control.
Impact on Personal Life
The consequences were severe. Sims's partner ended their relationship upon learning of the incident, forcing him to move back in with his parents in South Gloucestershire. He also changed jobs to work for BRC recruitment agency in Bristol, which is closer to his parents' home. While he did not lose his job, the court heard that his progression would be restricted, and he now relies solely on public transport.
Sims earns around £2,000 per month, paying his parents £500 for board and lodging. He had one previous conviction, a motoring offence from 2013.
Sentencing and Reaction
District Judge Sophie Toms handed down an 18-month driving ban, a £500 fine, a £200 victim services surcharge, and £85 prosecution costs. She told Sims: “You are very fortunate you didn't hurt, maim or kill anyone after taking the ridiculous decision to get behind the wheel having consumed alcohol.”
Speaking outside court, Sims told WalesOnline: “I'm just really grateful I didn't injure anyone else.” He described the incident as a wake-up call.
