A man who was 'driven nuts' by what he believed were annoying noises coming from his neighbours has admitted his shock after discovering the true source some three weeks later. In a Reddit post, he explained that every night around 11pm, a low humming sound would start. 'Not loud enough to complain officially and call the cops, but just annoying enough to make me lose my mind,' he wrote. He would press his ear against the wall, trying to figure out what his neighbours were doing—speculating about a new appliance, giant aquarium, or secret underground bunker.
The Awkward Confrontation
The man resorted to passive-aggressive revenge by using his blender at 7am every morning. However, everything changed when he finally ran into his neighbour in the driveway. 'Hey, weird question, but do you hear that humming at night?' he asked. The neighbour looked confused, then his face suddenly lit up. He politely informed the man that the noise was actually coming from his own water heater. 'My water heater,' the man exclaimed. 'The one in my house. The one I'd been blaming on him for weeks.'
Turns out, sediment builds up at the bottom over time, and when the heating element tries to work through all that gunk, it makes a deep rumbling sound. A technician flushed the whole system and showed the man the disgusting residue that came out. The technician explained that most units last 8-12 years if maintained properly. After the flush, the humming was gone. 'My neighbours probably think I'm insane. I brought them a pie as an apology,' the man said, asking if anyone else had blamed neighbours for something that was entirely their own house's fault.

One grateful Reddit user responded: 'You have just solved this problem I'm having. It's so bad that I have woken up with tinnitus on some nights. I thought it was my fridge but makes sense to be the water heater, it's all through the house and stronger in that area. Thanks!'
A second person shared a similar scenario: 'We live in a new build, there are 18 units and we have moved in second here. There were some issues, but was resolved, but we constantly have this leak from neighbours' balcony above and it's not their fault, it's builders. Anyway... they came this morning and just little after 8am started drilling, not for long, just to cut piece of the ceiling, to see where the leak is coming from. Then I thought... few times I heard annoying noises from the other houses and was p***** off by them doing work and thinking they might changing all bathrooms or something like that, so the guy who cut the ceiling said all people had less or more leaks and fixing done.'
A third advised the man: 'Check your carbon monoxide detector while you’re at it.' While a fourth quipped: 'You sound insane!'
