Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Widow Launches Philanthropic Organisations in His Memory

Tenisha Warner, the widow of actor and singer Malcolm-Jamal Warner, has publicly identified herself for the first time while announcing the launch of two philanthropic organisations in his honour. In a social media post on Friday, the day before the eighth anniversary of their wedding, she shared a photograph of the couple holding hands on their wedding day and revealed the establishment of the Warner Family Foundation and River & Ember.

The Warner Family Foundation will operate as a young artists' scholarship programme, while River & Ember aims to strengthen bonds between parents and children. Tenisha Warner, a doctor of psychology, wrote on Instagram: 'In his honor, my daughter and I are launching River & Ember and officially opening the Warner Family Foundation. Together, we carry the legacy my husband and I began – one that nurtures children’s inner light and gives young artists the freedom to create outside the lines.'

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who died in a drowning accident in Costa Rica in July, had kept his wife and daughter's identities private during his lifetime. Tenisha Warner described her late husband as 'a river – steady, sure and always moving toward what matters' and 'an ember – glowing with encouragement, igniting possibility in those around him'. The organisations' name, River & Ember, was inspired by his spirit.

Warner, 54, was best known for playing Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show from 1984 to 1992, earning an Emmy nomination in 1986. He also starred in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident. He won a Grammy in 2015 for best traditional R&B performance for Jesus Children and was nominated in 2023 for best spoken word poetry album for Hiding In Plain View.

Warner died on 20 July while swimming with his eight-year-old daughter off Cocles beach in Costa Rica. A riptide swept them out, and surfers rescued the pair, but Warner was pronounced dead at the scene. His Cosby Show co-star Phylicia Rashad honoured him at the Emmys in September, saying he 'remains in our hearts'.
