Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, has died after drowning while swimming with his eight-year-old daughter off the coast of Costa Rica. The incident occurred on Sunday at a beach near the Playa Grande resort in Cahuita, Limón.
Costa Rican authorities reported that Warner and his daughter were caught in a dangerous water current. Surfers who noticed the pair struggling intervened, using a surfboard to bring the young girl to safety. A volunteer lifeguard assisted in bringing Warner and another surfer to shore, but despite CPR efforts, Warner was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Costa Rican Red Cross confirmed that the actor's death was ruled an accident, with the cause being asphyxia by submersion. The Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ) stated that Warner 'appears to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current.'
Warner, who also appeared in television series such as Sons of Anarchy, The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story, and The Resident, has been mourned by fans and former co-stars. His ex-girlfriend Regina King shared a tribute on Instagram, while Geoffrey Owens, his Cosby Show co-star, described him as 'a lovely man, a sweet and sensitive soul.'
