Married At First Sight UK contestant Steven Springett has revealed he underwent extensive reconstructive surgery after being brutally attacked in his early 20s. The 34-year-old groom was left with a fractured cheekbone, shattered teeth and a broken nose after being kicked and punched by nine men over an old college dispute.
Steven, a former footballer for Ebbsfleet United who now works as an investment banking manager, had to wear a face mask for six months following the attack. He admitted he didn't want to leave his home during that period, but now says the lengthy recovery process gave him a positive outlook on life.
In a new interview, Steven explained he was attacked after leaving a nightclub, with the assailants holding a grudge from a minor disagreement at college. 'I fractured my right cheekbone, I've damaged my teeth, I've got a few scars on my chin,' he said. 'I shattered my nose, so I've still got a slight bend in there, but I had reconstructive surgery.'
Steven required dozens of stitches and multiple cosmetic surgeries in recent years to repair the damage. He believes the attack stemmed from a minor disagreement on the football pitch, with one attacker previously throwing forks at him in the canteen and a dispute over a girl years before. One of the attackers was sentenced to 10 months in prison.
The new series of Married At First Sight UK features 18 participants, including international contestants. The show continues on E4, Sunday to Thursday at 9pm.
