BBC Wales Today presenter Lucy Owen has shared a photograph from her hospital bed after undergoing eye surgery, updating viewers on her planned return to the programme.
The popular presenter has been taking time off work for an operation on her eye. In a video posted on Instagram before the treatment, she told followers she was having a lens replacement in her left eye as a result of a detached retina.
Alongside the video, she wrote: "Nice and straightforward, fingers crossed, and hopefully I’ll be able to see more than a blur in my right eye after. Wish me luck!"
Post-surgery update
After the surgery, the 55-year-old shared an update with a photo taken from her hospital bed, showing her wearing a patch over her left eye. She posted: "All done. Yet another huge thank you to NHS for the wonderful care I’ve had. Mr Williams and his team saved my sight just over a year ago and now they’re helping improve it. So very grateful always."
She also informed BBC Wales viewers that she would soon be back on screen. "Bit of time to recover, then back on your tele next week. Limited makeup allowed, so you may want to go sound only!" she joked.
Support from followers and colleagues
Followers quickly offered their support. One commented: "Sorry to hear you've been poorly. Rest up now my love and look forward to seeing you and hearing from you on the television and radio once you're 100% fit and well xxx."
A second said: "Wishing you a speedy recovery Lucy." Another added: "Bless you angel! Speedy recovery, much love X." A fourth posted: "I wish you well Lucy." BBC colleague and weather presenter Sue Charles added: "Great news, Lucy… have a good rest and recuperation! xxx."
Career background
Lucy began her career at BBC Radio Wales as a researcher and is married to Welsh presenter Rhodri Owen. She joined the then-HTV Wales in 1995 as a newsreader and went on to host Wales Tonight. She later presented on the now-defunct ITV News Channel and anchored the main ITV News.
In 2007, the mother of one moved to the BBC and began presenting BBC Wales Today, where she has remained a familiar face. She has also hosted BBC Wales' consumer show, X Ray.
Earlier this year, she apologised to viewers after a coughing fit live on air forced her to hand over to colleague Derek Brockway. She later wrote on Instagram: "This has only happened to me once before, and it's an awful feeling. I really didn't think I was going to get to the end of the story. Fine during rehearsal, but it just came out of the blue. If you were watching huge apologies, at least you got most of your news croak and cough-free."
