Toby Aromolaran, a finalist on this year's Love Island, has faced significant online trolling during his time in the villa, according to his friend Lewis Preston. The 22-year-old semi-professional footballer has been criticised for coupling up with four different islanders before settling with Chloe Burrows.
Preston, who has been managing Toby's social media accounts, said the contestant has come 'full circle' after being initially labelled a villain. 'It started off with he's a villain and now they've realised he's harmless and he does care about people,' Preston told Newsbeat.
Preston acknowledged the awkward and embarrassing moments, such as when Toby lied to Kaz Kamwi about kissing Chloe. However, he believes Toby has grown from the experience. 'People have got to see him and all aspects of his personality and they've got to grow with him,' he added.
Concerns over contestants' mental health have been heightened following the deaths of former islanders Sophie Gradon and Mike Thalassitis. ITV introduced new duty of care protocols this year, including guidance on handling social media negativity. Preston said Toby is prepared due to his experience with nasty comments as a semi-pro footballer.
'Just because someone makes a wrong decision it doesn't mean they're a nasty person,' Preston said. 'I genuinely think he's going to come out of that villa not only with a girlfriend but as a better person as well.'
