Love Island fans have been left confused by a new catchphrase that has been heard on ITV's reality dating series. The latest episode of Love Island featured the contestants using a particular phrase that left countless viewers baffled.
What Does POA Mean on Love Island?
One of the most frequently heard phrases used by the Islanders this year is 'POA'. Specifically, they tend to approach someone and use it in the form of a question, such as: 'What is your POA?' The phrase began to trend online as fans clocked just how much it was being used.
During the most recent episode, one asked: 'Is POA the motto of the season?' Another viewer queried: 'POA seems to be the phrase of the season we've heard it like 500 times tonight.' While another suggested: 'Take a shot every time someone says POA.'
The Meaning of POA
The term is an initialism, a type of abbreviation where you pronounce each letter individually rather than saying them as a single word. It stands for 'plan of action'. So when one Islander asks another for their POA, they are essentially enquiring about their plans for that day or evening. More specifically, they want to know who they intend to pull aside for a chat and even the location, as that typically indicates whether it's just a conversation or something a bit more intimate.
The most observant viewers may have spotted that this question is most likely to be asked at the start of the day, or even as the Islanders begin their evening, all dolled up and picking up their drinks. Unlike previous series, where the occasional phrase has become a casual comment such as 'charge it' or 'say it with chest', POA actually carries a more literal meaning that ties in with the true essence of the show.
ITV's smash-hit reality dating show is now in its 13th series overall, with the current season now into its second week. We've only just witnessed the first official dumping for good, as Liverpool-based Robyn became the first to pack her bags and bid farewell. Yet she wasn't the first departure, as footballer George decided to quit for 'personal reasons' after just a handful of days. There have also been several other plot twists including numerous bombshells and even a fake dumping.
As the drama intensifies, the Islanders are well into the thick of things to discover who will walk away with the cash prize. Each year there appear to be certain catchphrases that become repeated amongst the Islanders and adopted by fans. This series has proved no different with viewers spotting that one phrase in particular appears to be in almost constant use.
Love Island airs from Sunday through Friday on ITV2 and streaming on ITVX.
