Love Island fans have only just noticed an unexpected bond that has emerged 'out of nowhere' between Islander Tommy and the couple Jasmine and Kavan. The broadcaster's popular reality dating show is deep into its 13th series, and some viewers have argued that ITV executives have 'dropped the ball' by not highlighting this friendship more prominently.
Fans spot surprising friendship
With only a couple of weeks remaining until the grand finale, audiences have observed plenty of dramatic plot twists and developments. While romantic triangles still linger among some Islanders, the vast majority appear content in their pairings, including Lorenzo and Julia, Mica and Samraj, and Yasmin and Tommy. Yet fans have only recently begun to observe that one bond among the Islanders has barely been highlighted in the episodes.
Posting their discoveries on the Love Island subreddit, one individual shared a collection of photos under the title: "How did Tommy become Javan's adopted son?" according to OK!. It clarified: "Ever since Casa, he's been consistently around Jasmine and now Kavan too. Sometimes it seems like he's with them more than he's with Yasmin. I find it very funny and endearing, but also, did we ever see this friendship form? It seems like it appeared out of nowhere."
Evidence of the bond
Their proof comprised around nine screenshots from various episodes, all depicting Tommy spending time with Jasmine and Kavan in different locations. He can be seen sitting close to them as they engage in conversation on the day beds and near the fire pit. There's even a snapshot that captures all three of them sharing the same bed one morning, with Tommy showing something on his phone.
Many fans concur that they enjoy witnessing this camaraderie unfold, but question why the producers have opted to reveal so little of its evolution across episodes. One individual responded: "This is hilarious. This season really dropped the ball on airing friendships and relationships alike."
Viewers call for more friendship content
Another concurred, noting that it has recently become clear that several friendships have been omitted from the main edit, such as those between Simba and Ellie, and Lorenzo and Angelista. They remarked: "How are producers not capitalising on showing us this lore. They're sitting on a goldmine, and moreover, I can't take Finley/Elicia/Ellie drama or Aidan/Priya nonsense anymore."
Another person chimed in: "I love it so much. My favourite thing to look out for during the episodes. The last picture is funnier because he isn't even conversing with them; it's like he just wants to be in their presence." While a fan replied: "No, for real I really wish we saw more of the friendships and cute relationship moments outside of Unseen Bits, because the episodes post-casa have felt heavy and draining... even when Namibia was in the villa, we knew she was close with Lorenzo but never really saw them together."
Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
