Love Island fans have issued complaints after spotting 'scripted' scenes in the new series. Disgruntled ITV viewers have demanded a shake-up after noticing a 'peculiar' trend in Love Island Season 13.
Fans call out product placement adverts
We're merely days away from declaring this year's victors, but fans aren't entirely convinced the Islanders are being fully genuine. Unlike the All Stars series, the standard edition of the dating show features ordinary individuals seeking love in the renowned villa. This naturally implies they are less inclined to 'ham it up' for the cameras, but audiences have grumbled about this year's cast 'breaking the fourth wall' through product placement adverts.
Taking to TikTok, one fan posted a video criticising producers for seemingly assigning the Islanders advertising tasks during their villa stay, reports OK!. 'Love Island, can I be really honest? I fear you're breaking the fourth wall a little too soon by making all the Love Islanders do Solero and Ebay ads,' the fan shared.
Examples of scripted moments
Viewers previously highlighted that some of Lorenzo and Julia's most significant relationship milestones appeared like contrived adverts. Earlier this season, Lorenzo made it clear he wouldn't make a coffee for any of his partners because he made a promise before the show. But he eventually agreed to make a coffee for Julia, although the scene featured glossy shots of the Nescafe products he used to make the drink.
Just last week, Tommy, Yasmin, Lorenzo and Julia had a double date, but fans have questioned if it was a sweet gesture or a covert advert for the Poppi drink the Islanders could be seen sipping throughout. The TikToker continued: 'For now, until they leave the villa, please don't break the fourth wall,' before expressing: 'I feel like I can't watch it the same because I'm like "They already know that they're doing ads." They know that they're having to say certain things and script certain lines and being told what to say." So now I'm like "You're ruining it for me."'
Viewer reactions
The fan went on: 'I don't wanna see that until they're out. Put it in their contracts that they have to do it when they get out. Do that rather than making them do it in the villa.' While Love Island has never been one to shy away from showcasing its sponsors, viewers believe the in-villa adverts make the programme feel scripted.
Commenting beneath the video, one viewer remarked: 'Omg yes this is so strange,' with another concurring: 'It's so unnatural idk why they think it's a good idea.' Another penned: 'No I agree, because now how am I supposed to know what's scripted or not.'
Love Island airs Sunday to Friday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
