Lorraine Kelly Shares Scottish Dig Ahead of England Semi-Final

Lorraine Kelly has shared a hilarious Scottish sketch on Instagram ahead of England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina on Tuesday evening, in what appears to be a lighthearted dig at her husband Steve's support for England.

Lorraine's Scottish Pride

The ITV presenter flew to Boston last month to join the Tartan Army cheering on Scotland at the World Cup and has made her support for her home country well known. Meanwhile, her husband Steve Smith will be backing England in tonight's semi-final at Atlanta Stadium. If England win, it will be their first World Cup final appearance since they lifted the trophy in 1966.

On Tuesday, Lorraine took to her Instagram Story to share a sketch featuring a fictional Mary Queen of Scots speaking to an English doctor who cannot understand her thick Scottish accent.

The Sketch Content

In the video, Mary asks the English doctor for a prescription for her medication, but the woman struggles to understand. The clip is captioned: "English speakers after hearing a real Scottish accent for 10 seconds." An amused Lorraine shared the sketch and commented: "Can't stop watching this - utter utter genius - makes me belly laugh every time." She then quoted the clip, writing: "Your erse hole and your f***y."

The fictional Mary is dressed in medieval clothing while the English doctor wears modern attire. The doctor says: "I'm sorry could you speak a little bit more slowly. It's just I don't want to miss even the tiniest details and I might have to make some notes." In her thick Scottish accent, Mary replies deliberately slowly: "Okay. So. Are you gonna write me out a prescription for my f*****g medication or wit." The doctor responds: "I'm sorry I still didn't catch it, I wonder if you could just talk a little bit more Englishy." Mary adds: "Right listen. I've been through this before so I know the score. You need to hear every single gruesome detail, it's a disaster of my f***ing life just so I can get my medication eh."

Family Dynamics

Lorraine's dig is all in good spirit as her husband Steve and their daughter Rosie Kelly Smith are both English, although Rosie made her allegiance to Scotland clear by bringing a Saltire flag to her hen do while Scotland played in the US. The presenter, originally from the Gorbals in Glasgow, moved to Buckinghamshire in 2017 after living in Dundee and Perthshire for over 30 years. She regularly visits her mother, who still lives in East Kilbride.
