A mystery object captured on camera in the deep waters of Loch Ness has marked the seventh potential sighting of the legendary beast this year. The eerie incident occurred near the historic ruins of Urquhart Castle.
A tourist aboard one of the popular Jacobite Cruises boat tours was snapping photos of the world-famous scenery when they spotted a strange, 'green mass' lurking just beneath the surface. The photograph, which was recently uploaded to the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register, has sparked intense speculation after leaving the experienced cruise boat skipper flummoxed.
An entry on the Official Loch Ness Monster Sightings Register states: 'Sharon Herbert, visiting from Kent, took a picture of an unknown object close to the Jacobite cruise boat at 10.27am as it came to shore at Urquhart Castle.'
Even professionals who navigate the loch daily are at a complete loss to explain the phenomenon. The register noted: 'Jacobite Cruises have confirmed that their skipper says there is no explanation that they can offer as to what the green mass is.'
An Active Year for Nessie Hunters
The baffling encounter continues an active year for Nessie hunters, with six in-person sightings and one webcam capture recorded since January. By comparison, the entirety of 2025 saw only six in-person and four webcam sightings.
The flurry of activity began on March 1, when American tourist Tony Inhorn spotted a dark-greenish or grey body emerging from the water at a 45-degree angle. He said: 'She came about two feet out of the water and her exposed portion was about five to ten feet in length, suggesting it was just her very top. She was about 15 feet from the boat I was on.' Inhorn added: 'Nessie hovered for about five seconds, then dipped back into the water. Her body emerged against the chop of the surf, but appeared clearly defined against the waves, leading me to believe it wasn't just the current.'
Spring Sightings and Triangular Shapes
Spring brought even more reports. On April 21, US visitor Sara Gubicza spotted a triangular shape from a passing bus. She said: 'The fin size was about an 18 inch triangle and it was whitish grey. As far as how fast it was moving, I'm not really sure as I was on a bus riding by when I saw it. It seemed to be right in the middle of the loch. It wasn't close to any shore line.'
Just days later, on April 23, Canadians Margaret Sunstrum and Joan Sweeney spotted a large, whale-like shape, followed by Worcestershire resident Holly Palmer capturing an unidentified object on April 25. On May 18, US visitor Nickolas Wiegand also filmed a dark image breaking the water, using roadside signs on the shore to gauge its massive scale.
Whether the sightings are tricks of the light or genuine proof of the legendary monster first reported by George Spicer in August 1933, the mystery of Loch Ness continues to endure.
