Liverpool's summer countdown of their 100 greatest players reaches its conclusion on Sunday, with Kenny Dalglish topping the list, followed by Steven Gerrard and Mohamed Salah. The rankings were determined by a combination of statistics, fan votes, former players, journalists, and a club panel, with almost 1.5 million picks submitted.
Dalglish Takes Top Spot
Kenny Dalglish, known as 'The King', is ranked number one. Chief Liverpool FC Correspondent Ian Doyle highlights Dalglish's impact after replacing Kevin Keegan in 1977, his unparalleled vision as a creator, and his two spells as manager. Doyle notes Dalglish's dignity and compassion during the Heysel and Hillsborough tragedies as key to his legacy.
Gerrard and Salah in Top Three
Steven Gerrard, a local lad who reinvented himself multiple times, is second. Doyle emphasizes Gerrard's ability to carry the team during trophy-dry spells and his iconic performance in Istanbul. Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian King, is third, having scored 44 goals in his debut season and becoming the only player to win PFA Player of the Year three times.
Barnes, Rush, and Souness Complete Top Six
John Barnes is fourth, praised for his exciting wing play and later transformation into a cultured midfielder. Ian Rush, the goalscorer with 346 goals in 660 appearances, is fifth. Graeme Souness, a fearsome midfielder and captain who led Liverpool to the treble in 1984, is sixth.
