Liverpool boxer Molly McCann has shown support for Katerina Johnson-Thompson after the Woolton-born athlete announced a "difficult" decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth Games.
As the Commonwealth Games began in Glasgow, Scotland, many expected Johnson-Thompson to compete for a third gold medal. However, she was among nine Team England members replaced in the squad.

Johnson-Thompson posted on Instagram a picture with her head buried in her arms alongside training photos, captioned: "I was so looking forward to competing on home soil and having the chance to defend my Commonwealth title. Although the injury I picked up earlier this season has improved, I haven't been able to get back to the level I need to compete at my best."
She added: "After discussing it with my team, we've made the difficult decision to focus on giving myself the best chance of being ready for the European Championships, so working very hard to be there later this season. Missing a championship is never easy, but I know it's the right decision. I can't wait to be back competing again soon."

McCann responded with "Big love Kat x". Team England's athletics team leader said: "I wish the athletes the very best of luck through their recoveries or for the upcoming opportunities ahead with the rest of their seasons. We are delighted to be welcoming an additional five athletes to Team England, across a range of different events."
Johnson-Thompson's career includes an Olympic silver medal, two World Championship heptathlon golds, and two Commonwealth Games golds.
Partner's influence
Her partner, retired hurdler Andrew Pozzi, has encouraged her to continue. She told Athletics Weekly: "He has actually convinced me to carry on for longer. He says everyone should be an athlete for as long as they can. The grass isn't as green as it may seem on the other side. He still trains, he still runs hills with me on Saturdays. He's still got that urge as an athlete to be competitive, but it's just there's no outlet for him, so I think he's probably convinced me the other way to try and stay as long as I possibly can."
