Scots singer Lewis Capaldi left fans emotional after making a surprise appearance alongside Niall Horan at the O2 Arena in London. The 29-year-old joined his close friend on stage during Niall's Dinner Party: Live On Tour show on Saturday night, October 3, with the pair performing the One Direction hit You & I.
Surprise duet goes viral
Fans erupted when they realised what song the duo were about to sing, with clips of the unexpected performance quickly going viral online. Niall appeared to joke about the surprise appearance as Lewis walked on stage, asking: "So Lewis, what are you doing here?" The Scots star replied: "I was just passing through."
The 33-year-old singer then told the crowd they had "something special" for them which they had been practising before launching into the One Direction hit. During the performance, the pair sat around a dinner table, matching the theme of Niall's tour and his latest album, with the Irish singer playing guitar as Lewis provided a beat on the stool beside him.
Fans react with tears
One fan, who goes by the user @megsiesmith, shared a clip on TikTok with the caption: "Oh so i'll just cry wow," while the video itself was posted with the words: "I didn't know I needed this version of You and I," over it. The emotional reaction continued in the comments, with fans admitting they were left in tears by the unexpected reunion.
One comment read: "I didn't even know this was a possibility." With a regretful fan posting: "... I will not hestitate buying tickets next time." While a third stated: "I'm ugly crying on a Sunday morning." "I'm so so so so mad, I'm speechless," another fan added, while someone else simply wrote: "I am in tears."
Long-standing friendship
One fan was reminded of the pair's plans to tour together, writing: "I will never forgive Covid (for a lot of reasons) but especially for taking away these two going on tour together." Lewis was due to join Niall on his Nice to Meet Ya North American tour in 2020, but the planned shows were cancelled following the global pandemic.
The pair have remained close friends since first meeting early in Lewis' career. Niall previously opened up about their friendship during an appearance on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show in 2023. The singer revealed that he first discovered Lewis through videos of him performing his own songs. He recalled messaging the Scots singer to tell him: "'I love what you’re doing. This is amazing. Good Luck'."
Niall later invited Lewis to perform before one of his shows in Glasgow, with the pair meeting the day before and quickly hitting it off. "We met the day before, had a few pints and straightaway we clicked, you know it’s the Celtic thing," Niall said. The former One Direction star has continued to support Lewis throughout his career, including the singer's break from the music industry between 2023 and 2025.
