Adam Driver has broken his silence over allegations made by Lena Dunham in her memoir Famesick, telling reporters at the Cannes Film Festival that he is saving his response for his own book. The actor, who starred in Dunham's HBO series Girls, made the comment during a press conference for his new film Paper Tiger.
In her memoir, which topped the New York Times bestseller list in April, Dunham describes several incidents involving Driver on the set of Girls. She recalls a late-night rehearsal during which Driver became 'verbally aggressive' and 'hurled a chair at the wall' after she forgot her lines. She also claims that during the filming of their characters' first sex scene, Driver 'hurled me this way and that', leaving her stunned.
When asked by the Guardian about the allegations at the Cannes press conference, Driver responded: 'I have no comment on any of that – I'm saving it all for my book,' provoking laughter in the room. He has not previously responded publicly to the claims.
Driver, who has received Oscar nominations for BlacKkKlansman and Marriage Story, was at Cannes to promote Paper Tiger, a 1980s-set crime drama directed by James Gray. The film also stars Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson, who missed the premiere due to scheduling conflicts.
During the press conference, Gray delivered a broader critique of modern American capitalism, describing the unchecked dominance of the market as 'devastating'. He said the film is set in 1986 because it represented 'the beginning of the moment in which the market became God'.
