Kym Marsh Announces Major Career Pivot Ahead of 50th Birthday
Actress and singer Kym Marsh has publicly declared her intention to implement a significant career transformation as she approaches her landmark 50th birthday in June. The former Coronation Street star confirmed she plans to dramatically reduce her professional workload after years of constant touring, choosing instead to focus on family commitments and personal stability.
Prioritizing Family Over Professional Demands
Speaking candidly on the Nicky Byrne HQ podcast this week, Marsh explained how her perspective has evolved with age. "As I've got older, I realise that spending time with my family is the most important thing," she revealed. "I've been on tour now for the last four years, on and off... and it's got to the stage where - I'm 50 this year. I'm 50 on June 13, which incidentally is our last show."
The Cheshire-based performer emphasized that her decision stems from wanting to provide stability for her youngest daughter, Polly, who is preparing for crucial GCSE examinations. "I think because I've just been touring so much, I've decided that I probably need to knock that on the head for a little bit," Marsh elaborated. "I need to stay static in one place, wherever that place may be, so that at least I can have stability and have family around."
Personal Life Developments Amid Career Transition
Marsh's career announcement arrives just weeks after reports surfaced suggesting she had become engaged to personal trainer Tom Dickinson following a whirlwind six-month romance. According to sources, Dickinson proposed in Paris beside the Eiffel Tower in late March, with one insider describing their relationship as "like a fairytale."
The actress currently stars in the psychological thriller Single White Female, playing unhinged lodger Hedy alongside Lisa Faulkner during a nationwide tour. However, she admitted the demanding schedule has taken its toll, prompting her decision to step back from such intensive commitments.
Family Considerations and Past Experiences
Marsh shares her 15-year-old daughter Polly with ex-husband Jamie Lomas, whom she married in 2012 before divorcing two years later. The former couple tragically lost their son Archie in 2009, who was born 18 weeks premature and died shortly after birth. Marsh also has two adult children from a previous relationship: David, 30, and Emilie, 28.
"My youngest is 15, she's about to do her GCSEs, and I feel like she's really at that point which is quite critical for her that I'm around," Marsh explained regarding her decision. "She's got a great dad, he's brilliant, and a great stepmum, but you just need your mum sometimes as well for that emotional support."
Recent Career History and Future Plans
The former Hear'Say singer's decision follows an intense period of stage performances, including roles in Fatal Attraction, the Take That musical Greatest Days, and 101 Dalmatians: The Musical. Her upcoming birthday coincides with the final performance of her current tour, marking what she describes as a natural turning point.
During her podcast appearance, Marsh also shared amusing anecdotes about her relationship with Dickinson, including their differing eating habits and how his mother once accidentally called her Michelle - referencing her long-running Coronation Street character. "People do all the time. It's a slip of the tongue - still in the street, people will go, 'Were you in Coronation Street?' I go, yeah. 'Are you not working now?' And I go, no, I am, I've done loads of stuff since," she recounted with humor.
If Marsh marries Dickinson, it would be her fourth marriage following previous relationships with Scott Ratcliff, Jamie Lomas, and Jack Ryder. Her career shift represents a deliberate move toward greater work-life balance as she enters her sixth decade, prioritizing personal fulfillment alongside professional achievements.
