Kylie Minogue has disclosed that she was diagnosed with cancer for a second time in early 2021, following her successful treatment for breast cancer in 2005. The revelation comes in her new Netflix documentary, titled 'Kylie', which was released today.
In the documentary, the pop star explains that she kept the diagnosis private, unlike her first battle with cancer which was highly publicised. 'Thankfully, I got through it. Again. And all is well,' she says. Minogue, now 57, underwent treatment and has since recovered.
Minogue struggled to find the right time to announce the news, even after the success of her Grammy-winning 2023 single 'Padam Padam'. She describes feeling like 'a shell of a person' and not wanting to leave the house. Her song 'Story', from the album 'Tension', references this period with lyrics about keeping a secret.
Minogue emphasises the importance of early detection, noting that she was diagnosed after a routine check-up. 'There will be someone out there who will benefit from a gentle reminder to do their check ups,' she says. The documentary, directed by Michael Harte, also features interviews with her sister Dannii and former duet partners Jason Donovan and Nick Cave.
