Big Bang Theory Star Kunal Nayyar Secretly Pays Strangers' Medical Bills
Kunal Nayyar, the actor best known for portraying astrophysicist Rajesh Koothrappali across all twelve seasons of the hit CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory, has opened up about his unique approach to philanthropy. In a candid interview with The i Paper, the 44-year-old star disclosed that he frequently visits GoFundMe to anonymously settle medical bills for random families, describing it as his "masked vigilante thing."
From Sitcom Success to Generous Giving
Nayyar, who rose to fame at age 26 when cast on the show alongside Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, and Johnny Galecki, achieved significant financial stability through his role. During the later seasons, he earned an impressive $1 million per episode, contributing to an estimated net worth of $45 million, as reported by Fortune just a month after his interview.
However, Nayyar insists that his wealth does not feel burdensome. "Money has given me greater freedom and the greatest gift is the ability to give back, to change people's lives," he explained. He views his fortune as "a grace from the universe," emphasizing that it doesn't "weigh heavy" on him.
Philanthropic Efforts Beyond GoFundMe
Nayyar's charitable activities extend beyond online donations. Together with his wife, fashion designer Neha Kapur, he funds college scholarships for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The couple also supports animal charities, driven by their love for dogs.
Despite his capacity to make substantial contributions, Nayyar encourages everyone to find ways to support others, regardless of their financial means. He critiqued societal expectations, stating, "Right now, people are not happy because we are all expecting someone else to be kind. We are expecting a president or a politician, some leader, to come and bring us world peace."
He illustrated his point with a poignant analogy: "But there is no world peace if your neighbor comes to your door wanting some sugar for their tea, and you lock it against them and say 'get away.'"
Navigating the Demands of Fame and Fortune
Nayyar acknowledges that his lifestyle differs markedly from the typical nine-to-five job. When filming, he often endures grueling schedules, with days stretching to 16 hours and only six-hour turnarounds. To manage stress during these intense periods, he relies on a simple mantra: "Surrender."
"Sometimes, if I find myself really banging my head against something, and it's just one of those days where everything's going wrong, I just tell myself surrender," he shared. "Take a breath. Take a pause. Let's just see what happens."
This mindset helps him maintain balance while continuing his philanthropic endeavors, proving that his generosity is as much a part of his character as his on-screen persona.
