Kristen Stewart Haunted by Diana Role, Avoids Paris Drives

Hollywood actress Kristen Stewart has disclosed that she continues to be profoundly haunted by the memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, years after portraying the late royal in the biographical drama Spencer. The American star, now 35, admits she cannot drive around London or Paris without being overwhelmed by thoughts of Diana, whose tragic death occurred in the French capital in 1997.

Enduring Emotional Impact of the Role

Stewart earned critical acclaim for her performance in Pablo Larraín's 2021 film, which delves into Diana's personal crisis during the Christmas of 1991 as she contemplated divorcing Prince Charles. The role garnered Stewart nominations for an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a Critics' Choice Movie Award. However, the emotional toll has persisted long after filming concluded.

"I still am haunted," Stewart confessed in a recent interview with The Telegraph. "I can't drive round this city, and Paris for that matter, without thinking about her. All the love that poured out of this woman… I can cry about her at any moment." She described feeling "a bit like a shell" by the end of production, mirroring Diana's own reported emotional state.

Physical and Psychological Transformation

Director Pablo Larraín identified an overlap between Stewart's experiences and Diana's, noting similarities in their energies. To embody the Princess, Stewart worked extensively with vocal and movement coaches and wore meticulously recreated Chanel gowns that served as both armour and artistic expression.

"The clothes were part of the armour," Stewart explained. "They allowed me to step into her physical space and create images of her in this prison of a castle, yet wearing lavish, stunning pieces of clothing. That is a poem in itself." Diana was a known admirer of Chanel, though she reportedly avoided items with the brand's interlocking CC logo after her divorce, associating it with Charles's affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.

Historical Context of Diana's Life and Death

Diana's marriage to Prince Charles was marred by infidelity rumours and leaked phone conversations, culminating in their 1996 divorce. She tragically died at age 36 on August 31, 1997, from injuries sustained in a car crash in Paris's Pont de l'Alma tunnel. Her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and driver Henri Paul died instantly. A 2008 inquest concluded that Paul, who had alcohol in his system, and pursuing paparazzi unlawfully contributed to her death.

Stewart's poignant reflections highlight the lasting impact of Diana's legacy, both on those who knew her and on artists who interpret her story. The actress's inability to separate herself from the role underscores the deep connection she forged while portraying one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century.
