Klopp to reunite with two ex-Liverpool coaches in Germany

Jurgen Klopp is due to be reunited with former Liverpool coaches after being appointed Germany boss. The 59-year-old is expected to be officially appointed as head coach of his country soon.

Backroom team taking shape

Ahead of his unveiling, Klopp has been making decisions over the backroom team that he wants in situ at the DFB - and it appears that he is keen on a couple of reunions. According to Sky in Germany, both Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz are expected to be appointed to his team, the pair having worked closely with him during his time at Liverpool.

Speaking about the pair’s relationship in 2020, Lijnders said: “There’s a super dynamic between us. It’s much more than just assistant and manager. What I mean by that is that I believe you need 100 per cent trust in this job because we have to make so many decisions on a daily basis. I love working for him. He sees who I am, and respects that. We know what to expect from each other.”

Since then, Lijnders has embarked on a managerial career of his own, having had a seven-month spell with Red Bull Salzburg. He then returned to the Premier League after being appointed as an assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City - a job Klopp encouraged him to pursue. “The moment Pep called, and the feeling he gave me about what he wanted to do with the team by bringing me in, the trust he already had before we discussed how it would look, that made the decision much easier,” Lijnders said. “But you cannot put away 10 years of Liverpool that easily. But I’m really proud to come to a club of this magnitude, so successful over the last 10 years and with a manager that defined football. When I spoke with Jürgen he was so clear: ‘If you don’t do it, I will take the assistant job.’”

Elsewhere, Krawietz worked with Klopp at Liverpool until his departure in 2024. Sven Bender is also expected to be named as part of the new set-up within the German national side.
