The Channel 4 drama Kiri, starring Sarah Lancashire, has been hailed by viewers as 'better than Broadchurch'. The four-part miniseries, first released in 2018, follows a social worker who becomes the target of a media witch hunt after a young girl goes missing.
Plot and Reception
Sarah Lancashire plays Miriam, a 'no-nonsense' social worker who arranges for a little girl named Kiri to have an unsupervised visit with her biological grandparents. When Kiri disappears, Miriam finds herself under fire from colleagues, the press, and police.
Viewers have compared the series to Broadchurch, with one calling it 'EXCELLENT' and praising the 'stunning, understated performances'. Another said: 'Superb. Bafta-nominated, excellent. Have a watch and judge for yourself.' A third added: 'Riveting right up to the end.'
Cast and Production
The series was written by award-winning screenwriter Jack Thorne, known for Skins and This Is England. The stellar cast includes Lucian Msamati, Paapa Essiedu, Lia Williams, Wunmi Mosaku, Steven Mackintosh, and Finn Bennett.
Filmed in Bristol, Lancashire noted: 'We filmed all of the exteriors there. It’s Miriam’s patch. It’s fantastic, vibrant, really colourful, really edgy, completely non-conformist, which is very much who she is.'
