Kim Kardashian and Eva Longoria have joined a wave of celebrities publicly criticising recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in Los Angeles and President Donald Trump’s decision to send military forces to suppress protests.
Taking to Instagram, Kardashian wrote: “When we're told that ICE exists to keep our country safe and remove violent criminals, great. But when we witness innocent, hardworking people being ripped from their families in inhumane ways, we have to speak up. We have to do what's right.” She added: “Growing up in LA, I've seen how deeply immigrants are woven into the fabric of this city. They are our neighbours, friends, classmates, coworkers and family. Our communities thrive because of immigrants.”
Longoria echoed the sentiment in a TikTok video, describing mass deportations as “inhumane” and “un-American”. She said: “These round-ups are happening at birthday parties, at elementary school graduations, at Home Depot. Those are not criminals. We need more compassion. Immigrants feed us, care for our families and support our communities.”
The backlash follows Trump’s controversial deployment of thousands of National Guard troops and 700 Marines to Los Angeles without permission from California Governor Gavin Newsom. At the BET Awards, rapper Doechii condemned the use of military force against protests, while actor Mark Ruffalo described it as a manipulation tactic. Singer Demi Lovato called the events “heartbreaking”, and Tyler, the Creator posted a blunt “F*** ICE”.
