Kim Cattrall on Luxury Underwear, Chia Seeds, and the Joy of Dining at Home
Kim Cattrall on Luxury Underwear, Chia Seeds, and Dining at Home

Kim Cattrall, best known for her role as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City, has opened up about her shopping habits, from luxury underwear to her love of tea and vintage finds. The actor, who also starred in films such as Police Academy, Mannequin, and The Ghost Writer, shared her insights in an interview with the Guardian's How I Shop series.

Treats and Food Shopping

Cattrall's last treat for herself involved food: a fried cod and chips meal at No1 Cromer in Norfolk. She described it as "worth every bite." She shops at Marks & Spencer and Sainsbury's in London, praising M&S's ready-made food, and occasionally visits Fortnum & Mason for peaches in brandy. Reflecting on her past, she said, "When I was younger, I used to look out for the yellow stickers, but not any more. I can afford to shop at Fortnum & Mason, so I’m doing good."

Gifts and Gadgets

The actor loves giving and receiving gifts, especially framed photographs. She mentioned a recent gift from a friend: a picture of a favorite London spot in a silver frame. Cattrall is not keen on gadgets but adores books. She reads physical copies, avoiding Kindles, and recently finished Sandwich by Catherine Newman and is reading Show Don’t Tell by Curtis Sittenfeld. She rarely lends books, as people may not return them or may fold pages, which she considers a crime.

Online and In-Store Shopping

Cattrall prefers bricks-and-mortar stores over online shopping, as she likes to feel fabrics and read labels. She enjoys department stores like Bloomingdale's, where she can have lunch and meet friends. Her favorite gadget is not a tech device but her air purifier, an AirDoctor, which she orders online to reduce dust while traveling.

Underwear and Splurges

When it comes to underwear, Cattrall opts for luxury if necessary. Her biggest splurge was her New York City apartment, which she renovated with designer Tony Ingrao, taking inspiration from art deco. She discarded old Ikea furniture to create a space reflecting her success. For everyday items, she doesn't scrimp, saying, "If I want something, I’m going to have it."

Fashion and Vintage

Cattrall passes on clothes and costume jewelry to friends, recycling items she no longer wears. Her greatest vintage find is a 1926 glass mirrored table, discovered dusty in a stall. She protects it carefully, noting it's older than she is.

Tea and Dining

She is not a coffee fan, describing it as "a cup of acid." Instead, she enjoys Barry's and Yorkshire Tea, as well as ginger tea with lemon. Cattrall loves dining at home, using her Ninja air fryer and good stove. She values privacy, especially after losing anonymity, and finds home meals more enjoyable than dining out.
