The world of football has united in mourning the loss of Kevin Keegan, the legendary forward who died aged 75 following a battle with cancer. His family announced that he passed away surrounded by his wife and daughters.
A Career Defined by Trophies and Accolades
Nicknamed King Kev and Mighty Mouse, Keegan remains the only Englishman to have won the Ballon d'Or more than once, achieving the feat in 1978 and 1979. He was brought to Liverpool by Bill Shankly in 1971, forming a formidable partnership with John Toshack. During his time at Anfield, he won the First Division title three times, the FA Cup, the UEFA Cup twice, and the 1977 European Cup.
After his decorated spell on Merseyside, Keegan made a shock move to West German side Hamburg, where he was twice named European Footballer of the Year. He returned to England with Southampton in 1980 before moving to Second Division Newcastle, helping the club win promotion to the top flight before retiring. Keegan earned 63 England caps, scoring 21 goals, and captained the national team at the 1982 World Cup.
Managerial Career and Tributes
Keegan returned to football as manager of Newcastle in 1992, leading them to the Premier League and coming close to winning the title. He later managed Fulham, England (resigning after Euro 2000), and Manchester City. An emotional return to Newcastle lasted just eight months due to tensions with owner Mike Ashley.
Liverpool FC paid tribute, saying: "We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and mourn his loss. His indomitable spirit and remarkable contribution will be forever etched in our history and his legacy will live on." Newcastle United added: "Kevin was more than a legendary footballer and manager. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters... Kevin gave supporters hope and pride, and led a team whose style, spirit and passion captured the imagination of football fans around the world." Former club Hamburger SV stated: "With Kevin Keegan, world football loses one of its most defining personalities. We will always cherish an honourable memory of our former championship player and two-time Ballon d'Or winner."
The England national team is due to celebrate Keegan's life when they host World Cup winners Spain at Wembley in September.
