Keeley Hawes, best known for her role as Lady Agnes Holland in the 2010 BBC series Upstairs Downstairs, has a personal life that fans are eager to explore. The 50-year-old actress rose to fame playing Zoe Reynolds in Spooks and has been married twice, with her second husband being the famous actor Matthew Macfadyen.
First Marriage to Spencer McCallum
Hawes married cartoonist Spencer McCallum in December 2001 after four years together. The couple had a son, Myles, but Hawes moved out of their Surrey home amid rumors she had left him for Macfadyen. In an interview with Night & Day, Hawes stated: "The most painful thing was that Spencer and I were such good friends. I was in my early twenties when I met him. We were best, best friends, then the lines got blurred. We had Myles, and getting married seemed like the natural thing to do."
She denied any affair with Macfadyen during her marriage, saying: "When I decided to leave my husband, nothing had happened between Matthew and me. I'm sure nobody would believe we never had an affair, but we really didn't. It wasn't love at first sight. It was a slow burn." Hawes maintains a good relationship with McCallum and his family, telling The Standard: "Spencer's parents have been phenomenal with my children. And Spencer is a great friend of my family now. We're all grown-ups."
Marriage to Matthew Macfadyen
Hawes married Spooks co-star Matthew Macfadyen in November 2004 when she was seven months pregnant. The couple have a son and a daughter together. Macfadyen, 51, is known for playing Mr Darcy in the 2005 Pride & Prejudice and for his role in Succession. Speaking to The Independent, Hawes recalled: "Matthew just came straight out with it and said, 'I love you,' in the rain one day. I thought, 'Oh dear, here we go'." She praised his acting in Pride & Prejudice: "I think he is absolutely brilliant... I watch that and I think he's such a brilliant, generous actor to work with - and to watch."
Career Highlights
Hawes began her career in the 1990s with roles in Heartbeat and Our Mutual Friend. Her breakthrough came as Zoe Reynolds in Spooks. In 2010, she starred in Upstairs Downstairs, a sequel to the 1970s series, set six years after the original. The show recently entered the UK Top 10 on Netflix. Hawes has three children: Myles from her first marriage, and two with Macfadyen.
