First Marriage to Spencer McCallum
Hawes married cartoonist Spencer McCallum in December 2001 after four years together. The couple had a son, Myles, but Hawes moved out of their Surrey home amid rumors she had left him for Macfadyen. In an interview with Night & Day, Hawes stated: "The most painful thing was that Spencer and I were such good friends. I was in my early twenties when I met him. We were best, best friends, then the lines got blurred. We had Myles, and getting married seemed like the natural thing to do."
She denied any affair with Macfadyen during her marriage, saying: "When I decided to leave my husband, nothing had happened between Matthew and me.
