Katy Perry has offered a pointed congratulations to her ex-boyfriend Josh Groban following his engagement to British actress Natalie McQueen, using the very song she wrote about him as the soundtrack to her playful response.
The 41-year-old pop star shared a TikTok video on Monday reacting to the news. The clip begins with a screenshot of a news article announcing Groban's engagement before cutting to Perry, clad in a white bathrobe, pulling an exaggerated sad face. She pours a fizzy drink into a glass, raises it in a toast, and then chugs the beverage, spilling some on her robe. She pretends to sob as she walks out of the frame, captioning the post simply with, "congrats."
The video is set to her 2010 hit "The One That Got Away," which is widely believed to have been inspired by her brief romance with Groban in 2009. The pair dated for a short time before deciding to remain friends.
Perry fueled speculation that the song was about Groban during a 2017 YouTube livestream when she referred to him as "the one that got away." Groban, 45, admitted during a 2018 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that he was surprised to learn this. "It's very sweet of her to say that. I'm very flattered by it. But I was very surprised by it, too," he said. He jokingly pointed out that the song's lyrics didn't align with his life, noting, "I never owned a Mustang. I don't have a tattoo. Are you sure that's about me?"
Groban explained that the couple ended their fling because they were "both very private" and realized they worked better as friends. "We've been very good friends to this day. She's the best," he added.
Groban announced his engagement to McQueen, 36, on Instagram last month, sharing photos from their proposal at Disneyland. "MY BEST FRIEND SAID YES!!!" he wrote. "Sharing this life with you is my happiest place, @nataliemcqueen." McQueen posted on her own Instagram: "I don't know if you recall but IN APRIL WE GOT ENGAGED!"
This will be Groban's first marriage. He has previously dated celebrities including Perry, January Jones, and Kat Dennings. He and McQueen have been together since 2022.
Meanwhile, Perry has been dating former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau since last summer.
