Katy Perry is reportedly planning a tell-all book and documentary about her 'dark marriage' to Russell Brand, following the former comedian and actor's conviction for rape and sexual assault.
The couple, who married in India, were together for 14 months before Brand ended the relationship by text message, a moment captured in the making of Perry's Part of Me concert documentary, just before she was due onstage for a major show. They announced their split in December 2011.
In the 15 years since, Perry has said little about the marriage and divorce, other than telling Vogue in a 2013 interview that Brand was 'very controlling'. She also said she found it 'really hurtful' to see his reaction to her being the boss on her world tour.
Conviction and Aftermath
Brand, 51, faced three charges of rape, three of sexual assault and one of attempted indecent assault against six women. On Thursday, he was found guilty at Southwark Crown Court of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
Insiders claim Perry was waiting for the outcome of the trial but had already been in 'active discussions' and is now set to finalise a deal for her account of the relationship.
A source told The Mail on Sunday: 'Katy has received multiple offers over the years to tell her story but would not consider anything until after the trial. She has a lot to say.'
'At the moment, she's considering a Netflix-type series and an autobiography. She and her team have been in active discussions.'
'There is a lot about that marriage which people don't know. It was a very dark period in her life.'
Legal Context and Reactions
Perry was not asked to testify during Brand's trial, but it was revealed that she could have been in the room during one of his sexual assaults, which took place in 2009. Brand was convicted of sexually assaulting a female Channel 4 worker after she was forced to give him a massage.
In legal submissions made public after the conviction, Brand's barrister Ian Winter KC said: 'The victim says that other people were in the room and witnessed it, possibly including the defendant's future wife, Ms Katy Perry.'
However, Brand's legal team argued that his marriage to the US star was irrelevant to the allegations. Prosecutors agreed not to mention her, and the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed she was never approached by police or asked to provide a witness statement.
The jury also found Brand guilty of raping a 21-year-old fan after meeting her at a 2009 stand-up show at the Hammersmith Apollo. His final two convictions involved kissing and groping a Capital Radio worker in a corridor in 2005, and groping an MTV worker during a party at a Soho bar in 2004.
Brand's current wife, Laura Gallacher, 39, told the jury that he was a 'caring, kind and a wonderful father to our children' and that 'I love him very much'.
A filmed red carpet interaction between Brand and Perry from the 2010 Vanity Fair Oscar Party has since gone viral. In it, Perry calls out Brand for not watching the awards ceremony, and he later holds up a pin badge or card that reads 'Obey', prompting her to go quiet. Fans have interpreted this as Brand asserting control over the singer in public.
It has since emerged that at least 10 more women are suspected to have been attacked by Brand, according to The Guardian. Following the verdict, it was also revealed that Brand was being investigated over two more rape allegations.
Speaking to BBC Breakfast on Friday, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said he would not be surprised if many more women came forward. Metro has contacted reps for Katy Perry for comment.
