Katie Price has revealed who the big “love of her life is” - and it’s not AWOL husband Lee Andrews or even Peter Andre. In an upcoming Sky documentary series about the glamour model’s rollercoaster life, the mum-of-five suggests that ex-boyfriend Dane Bowers was the one who got away.
The pair dated for two years between 1998 and 2000 - at the time Katie’s fame as her alter ego Jordan was at its height. In Katie Price: Nothing to Hide, singer Dane is one of the star’s former partners that features in the four-part documentary as she looks back at her 30 years in the spotlight.
“Dane Bowers! I used to love his songs. Why am I smiling? He was the love of my life. Did you tell him that?” Katie declares to her off-camera interviewer after being told they had spoken to Dane for the series too.
“Why did he f**k it up? He’ll probably blame me,” she goes on to add. “We just locked eyes,” Katie remembers as she recalls meeting the Another Level singer at a film premiere. “And yeah, he might have been the tubby one, but looks aren’t everything. I started talking to him and thought ‘I fancy you’.”
“From the get-go, it all went smoothly. I remember loving his music. We always used to play Boyz II Men and have sex. He was quite arrogant but very attentive to me. I just remember when we kissed, it was amazing. I loved Dane. Yeah, I did.”
The feeling was mutual, with Dane admitting in his separate interview: “We were in love 100%. We were comfortable very early.” Katie adds: “It all seemed so perfect, but he could be quite controlling, he didn’t like some of the shoots I did.” She says her near naked photoshoots caused a rift in their relationship.
Cracks also started to emerge when Dane collaborated with Spice Girls icon Victoria Beckham on a song. “The relationship started to change as if he… as if I was nothing and it was all about Victoria,” Katie recalls, scoffing as she repeats Victoria’s name several times, sounding annoyed.
Katie briefly complied with Dane’s wishes, and covered up in shoots, but their romance came to an end when she was offered the chance to shoot a raunchy calendar when Dane banned her from attending a work trip with him. “I gave her an ultimatum. ‘If you do that, I promise you it’s over,” Dane admits when looking back. “I don’t think she believed me.”
However, undeterred Katie went ahead with the shoot and the calendar. “Dane is not going to be happy about this, I can’t do a calendar and not be sexy.” True to his word Dane called it quits and the pair split, leaving Katie heartbroken. “He didn’t want to know me. I cried so much. And he left the flat. I just remember I was on my own and devastated. I took a whole load of pills,” Katie then tells the camera.
Katie’s brother and mum then reflect on Katie’s overdose attempt, remembering how she was clutching a picture of Dane in the hospital. Katie says: “I think it was attention. Did I really want to kill myself? No I just wanted him to want me and I thought doing that he would know how much I love him and I would get him back. No, he still didn’t want to know.”
She then says she only got together with Dwight Yorke to try to get revenge on Dane. She explains: “With Dwight, no it wasn’t love at all. It was f**king massive revenge on Dane. Plays for Man United, the football team he supports, in a different calibre to what Dane is. But no he(Dane) didn’t want to know. I was like a lunatic. Kept crying, didn’t eat.”
