Kate Middleton Reveals New Pet Dog's Name

The Princess of Wales shared an intimate family video on Monday, filmed by Will Warr in Norfolk, announcing the end of her preventative chemotherapy for cancer. The video featured tender moments with Prince William and their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

A sixth family member also captured hearts: the family's rarely-seen cocker spaniel, Orla. The dog appeared lying with the royal couple on a picnic blanket at the beach. Orla, whose name translates from Gaelic to 'golden princess', was a gift from Kate's brother James Middleton.

James bred a litter of cocker spaniel puppies from his late pet Ella, including Orla. The couple welcomed Orla in 2021, after previously owning a cocker spaniel named Lupo, also given by James and his wife Alizee Thevenet. Lupo passed away in 2020, with the Waleses announcing the loss on social media.

Orla's name has a regal meaning, while Lupo's name, Italian for 'wolf', pays homage to Kate's paternal great-grandmother, Olive Christiana Middleton née Lupton, whose family crest features wolves.
