Kate Garraway has broken her silence on the explosive interview with Jermaine Jenas, after he complained about his appearance on Good Morning Britain. The former England footballer sat down for his first interview last week following his axe from the BBC in 2024 amid complaints over his conduct.
Kate Garraway Speaks at TRIC Awards
Appearing at the TRIC Awards earlier today, Kate revealed that the 43-year-old was “fine with me after” his angry confrontation with her and fellow presenter Ranvir Singh live on air last week. “I think he wanted to talk about his experiences, didn't he? You just want to make sure you're asking the questions that were in people's minds,” she said of the chat. “He was fine with me after.”
Jermaine Jenas' GMB Interview
Jermaine appeared on the ITV show last Friday but things quickly became heated as he was questioned over his exit from the BBC, over allegations that he "sent unsolicited texts" to a female staff member at The One Show, which he co-presented for four years. It was subsequently reported that "multiple women" had come forward about explicit messages he sent to colleagues.
The following day, he shared a video claiming that the hosts had “an agenda”, and that there was a “thirst for blood” from one particular presenter - but he didn’t name names. When asked who she believed he was referring to, Kate added: “I’m not sure - I don’t know. It's hard isn't it because he has tried to own what happened but also there will still be people who still have a lot of questions. So you have to put those questions to him.”
Jermaine's Comments During the Interview
During the sit-down, which aired on Friday, he said: "I've lost everything, essentially. My job, my family, everything was kind of taken away from me. And that's not for me to decide the punishment, but that's exactly what happened - it's what I had to face." When he explained that he focused his attention on protecting his family at the time, Ranvir replied: "I notice you don't mention the women who you were texting, and who accused you of sending unsolicited, perhaps even videos or text messages, that they did not want, and did not expect from you. Do you have an apology to them?"
"I've always apologised. I don't think that's something I've never done. I've always apologised to everybody that was involved in it, whether it was the women who I was messaging and who were messaging me," he told her. "I wasn't given the opportunity to sit in front of anybody and really apologise to anybody, and that's fine. There's a duty of care around the situation."
Tensions Rise On Air
Things became tense when she suggested that Jermaine was “skirting around” what he had learned, to which he hit back: "I'm not skirting around anything, Ranvir. I'm more than happy to have the conversation, which is why I'm here. I'm not here to be defending myself in any way, shape or form. I know what I did was wrong and accept the punishments, so nobody's skirting around the responsibility of what I did. I know what I did and I know what I did was wrong, so I don't understand where [this] line of questioning's coming from. I understand why you have to come up with this line of questioning, and it's completely fine. And if you feel like I've not been punished enough, then go ahead and keep going."
Jermaine's Post-Interview Video
In a video shared on Instagram in the wake of his appearance, he insisted that he was “glad” to have agreed to the interview after a “tough” two years for his family. He told fans: "There's obviously a level of disappointment as well, just purely and simply with the direction that the interview was taken. It felt like they had an agenda. It felt like there was a thirst for blood from one presenter in particular. It just, if I'm honest, felt unnecessary to me and it leant itself to what I said in my last post, it's the reason I had fears going into it and why I questioned, do I need this in my life? They invited me on. I didn't ask to go on the show. But still, no matter how many conversations I had with producers about, 'Okay, we can touch on this, but we want to move forward and look at what's next,' it just felt like a trap. It just felt like one individual had an agenda and she was going to twist the knife because she wanted to."
