Kate Ferdinand has paid a touching tribute to Rio's late first wife, Rebecca Ellison, during celebrations for their son Tate's 18th birthday. The former The Only Way Is Essex star ensured that Rebecca, who tragically died from breast cancer in 2015 at the age of 34, was honored throughout the milestone event.
A Night for Tate
Taking to Instagram, Kate shared a series of photographs from the party. Among the images were four framed pictures displayed on a shelf, including one of Rebecca smiling alongside her two sons, Lorenz and Tate. Kate captioned the post: "A night for Tate."
Fans were quick to praise Kate's thoughtful gesture. One commented: "The pictures with their mum. Honestly no one better could have come into their lives and taken on the shoes of mum." Another wrote: "That pic of the 2 boys with their mummy, you're the best." A third added: "Honouring their mum is so beautiful, your an inspiration and I'm sure their mum would be so proud."
Stepfamily Dynamics
Kate serves as stepmother to Rio's three children from his marriage to Rebecca: Lorenz, Tate, and Tia. The couple also have two children together, Cree and Shae. Last year, Kate revealed that her stepchildren are comfortable with her referring to herself as their mum. On the Happy Place podcast, she explained: "Sometimes I'm 'Mummy Kate'. But Tia said, 'Kate, it's fine, I'm OK if you say Mummy. You don't have to say Mummy Kate. It doesn't bother me'."
However, Kate has also spoken about the challenges of blending a family. On the Blended podcast, she confessed that she spent her first Mother's Day after moving in with Rio and his children in tears after receiving no card. She said: "I felt like a mum, but I didn't get a card. I felt selfish for wanting one, but I just sobbed my heart out."
Kate's latest tribute to Rebecca demonstrates her commitment to honoring the memory of her stepchildren's mother while building her own loving relationship with them.
