Kai Rooney's Man United Boot Ban Lifted After Wayne's Approval

Kai Rooney will no longer be banned from wearing his sponsored Puma boots for Manchester United next season. The 16-year-old, son of United legend Wayne Rooney, was previously prohibited from using the boots at the U16 level due to a club policy requiring all academy players to wear the same footwear. However, as Kai has turned 16 before the August 31 cutoff, he will move up to the U18s, where the uniform policy does not apply.

Wayne Rooney Praises Academy Boot Policy

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United's all-time leading scorer with 253 goals, revealed the policy on The Smith Brothers: Not A Podcast, saying: "He’s obviously with Puma but when he plays for the Manchester United U16s, something which I really like is he can’t wear his Puma boots. All the academy have to wear the same boots. They do it because there’s people from areas where they can’t afford certain boots so I think it’s really good. But he’s played for the U18s a few times and he can then wear his Puma boots. He’s doing well to be fair to him."

Kai's Progress and Injury Setback

Kai signed a sponsorship deal with Puma in 2022 at age 12. He made his U18 debut for United at 15 in a 1-0 win against Everton last August and featured six times for the age group this season. Unfortunately, a season-ending injury in March sidelined him for the FA Youth Cup final against Manchester City, which United lost 2-1. Despite the setback, Kai remains focused on his career, telling The Talent Hunter on Instagram he aims to be "playing on the biggest stage amongst the best players, winning trophies" in five years.

Family Legacy and Future

As the oldest of Wayne and Coleen Rooney's four sons—Klay, Kit, and Cass—Kai faces high expectations to follow his father's path. He mirrors Wayne as a forward but is left-footed. The teenager's move to the U18s next season will allow him to wear his Puma boots, marking a new chapter in his development at Old Trafford.
