K-pop Star Kim Chaewon Sparks Health Fears Over Thin Appearance

Serious health concerns have been raised after K-pop idol Kim Chaewon appeared with a worryingly thin frame during a recent performance, sparking alarm among fans and observers. The 18-year-old member of the South Korean girl group TripleS looked significantly skinnier than usual while performing on stage at the group's concert in Taipei this week.

Visible Bones During Performance

Dressed in a sleeveless pink midriff top and a ruffled miniskirt, Chaewon's bones were clearly visible as she danced energetically to the group's single 'Bubble Gum Girl'. The concerning visual prompted immediate reactions from fans who witnessed the performance through social media videos.

Fan Reactions and Social Media Outcry

K-pop fans expressed horror and concern after footage of the performance circulated online. One commenter noted, 'It's amazing that she even has the strength to move, it's not normal,' while another observed, 'The camera adds ten pounds... I can't imagine how small this girl looks in person.' A third fan commented more starkly, 'I'm sorry, but she's literally skeleton. For a second I thought it was a skeleton AI dancing to K-pop, but omg! This is so wrong.'

Chaewon's Career Background

Kim Chaewon joined TripleS at just 16 years old, becoming part of the massive 24-member ensemble that has achieved significant success since its formation in 2022. The group has already released two studio albums, multiple EPs, and embarked on several world tours despite their relatively short existence.

Before joining TripleS, Chaewon was a member of the now-defunct girl group Busters, which she joined shortly before her 13th birthday. Her entertainment career began even earlier as a child actress, making her acting debut in 2008 when she was just four years old.

The Pressure of K-pop Industry Standards

The K-pop industry generates billions of dollars annually for South Korea's economy, demanding complete perfection from its young stars. According to investigative reporting in the book 'K-pop: Idols in Wonderland,' as many as eight out of ten female K-pop trainees stop menstruating due to extremely restrictive diets, as reported by the Korea Times. Additional factors including extreme stress and chronic sleep deprivation contribute to these health issues.

Other K-pop Stars' Experiences

Chaewon's situation reflects broader patterns within the industry. In 2023, K-pop star Hyein from NewJeans revealed the minimal meal she survived on during a music video shoot: some sliced avocado, two halves of a single cherry tomato, and some yellow rice.

More dramatically, Momo from the chart-topping group TWICE once confessed to starving herself so severely that she feared for her life. The Japanese performer, now 29, revealed she was told to lose 7kg (15lbs) in one week ahead of TWICE's official debut in 2015, with her place in the group hanging in the balance.

'I didn't eat anything for the whole week and went to the gym all the time,' Momo disclosed on the program Jihyo Candy Nights. 'And when I laid down on the bed and tried to sleep, I was scared that I wouldn't wake up again, so I suddenly started crying.' She survived on just one ice cube while exercising nonstop, ultimately receiving an additional three days to meet the weight target.

Tragic Consequences in the Industry

In even more distressing news, former K-pop idol Kwon Mina was rescued earlier this year after attempting suicide on New Year's Day. The 32-year-old, who has tried to end her life multiple times before, shared an alarming social media post titled 'Goodbye and I'm sorry' on January 1.

Mina previously attempted suicide in 2020, alleging long-term bullying during her time with former girl group AOA. She was hospitalized again in 2021 after being found unconscious at home following another suicide attempt. Prior to her January 1 attempt, the singer and actress shared on social media that she 'wasn't in a normal state of mind' and cited past bullying and an alleged sexual assault incident from 2007 as sources of mental anguish.

The situation with Kim Chaewon highlights ongoing concerns about the physical and mental health pressures facing K-pop idols, particularly young female performers navigating an industry with exacting standards and punishing expectations.
