Julia Roberts has revealed that she faced 'cruelty' from a few critical people early in her career, which contributed to her 'crippling insecurity'. The 57-year-old actress told People magazine that she did not enter the industry 'with much confidence' and that the negative encounters posed a challenge for her personal growth.
Roberts, whose career took off in the late 1980s, said the period between ages 15 and 25 was 'more bumps than smooth sailing'. She recalled that being embarrassed would stop her completely, but she has since come to view those lessons as valuable because they proved her endurance.
The actress reflected that her career choices were often about 'personal evolution and discovery'. She is currently promoting her new film 'After the Hunt', a crime drama directed by Luca Guadagnino, in which she plays a college professor whose life unravels after a student's accusation. The film is set for release in select cinemas on 10 October and nationwide on 17 October.
