Joy-Anna Forsyth Breaks Duggar Family’s Strict Dress Code with Shorts

Joy-Anna Forsyth, known for her role on the reality show 19 Kids and Counting, has seemingly defied her family’s conservative dress code by wearing shorts in a recent Instagram video. The 27-year-old mother of three posted a clip of her morning routine, in which she changed into a pair of shorts and an athletic top before heading to the gym.

The Duggar family, led by parents Jim Bob and Michelle, has long adhered to strict modesty standards. On the show, women typically wore long skirts and tops covering their shoulders. In her 2021 memoir, Forsyth’s sister Jinger Vuolo explained that the rule stemmed from a biblical interpretation that women should not wear men’s clothing.

Forsyth previously discussed the family’s dress code on The Unplanned Podcast, noting that her brothers were also prohibited from wearing shorts until their mid-teens. She stated that her parents “loosened up” after her teenage years but still considered shorts “on the line.”

This is not the first time Forsyth has broken family rules. In October 2023, she dyed her hair, a departure from the family’s preference for long, natural hair as outlined in their book Growing Up Duggar. The family’s strict guidelines were influenced by the Institute in Basic Life Principles Church, from which Forsyth and her husband have since distanced themselves.
