In August 2024, Jools Lebron, a 30-year-old supermarket worker from Chicago, posted a TikTok video during her break that would change her life. In it, she described her makeup as 'very demure, very mindful', criticising others for looking like cartoon characters. The video quickly went viral, amassing millions of views and spawning a global meme.
Within days, the phrase was adopted by major accounts, including Nasa, the White House, and Khloé Kardashian. Lebron appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with RuPaul, and brands flooded her with offers. However, the sudden fame brought overwhelming pressure. She received up to 100 packages a day, many of which were stolen, leading to a collapsed brand deal with a hair care company. An agency spread negative word about her, damaging her reputation.
This was not Lebron's first brush with fame. She had previously built a YouTube following of nearly a million subscribers by sharing her experiences as a transgender woman. But an online feud with influencer Patrick Starrr led to lost brand deals, a cocaine addiction, and her management dropping her. She returned to a normal job at a supermarket, feeling she had turned her life around—until 'demure' happened.
Reflecting on the viral moment, Lebron says she felt confusion and fear rather than excitement. 'No one tells you how to handle this,' she said. For 10 or 11 weeks, she was constantly travelling and staying in hotels. The pressure became crushing, and she felt used by brands seeking exposure. The dream turned sour as the volume of requests became unmanageable.
