Jonathan Van Ness, the beauty and hair care expert from the multi-award-winning show Queer Eye, has revealed their shopping habits, including a regret over a house purchase in Texas and a passion for secondhand bags. Their eight-year tenure on the show ended when its final season aired in January 2026.
Food and Daily Essentials
Van Ness buys food at the farmers' market, which is two blocks from their home in New York. They also use a grocery delivery service called Gopuff for non-farmers' market staples like Cinnamon Toast Crunch, milk, and kitty litter.
Their most-used gadget is a Mophie portable phone charger. For coffee at home, they use a Breville machine (marketed under the Sage brand in the UK) to make an americano with a splash of cold milk.
Fashion and Bags
Van Ness's favourite online store is eBay, where they are particularly obsessed with bags. They noted that resale is interesting but can be nerve-racking because of authentication concerns. Their favourite bricks-and-mortar shop in England is Space NK, where they buy Skin Rocks products by Caroline Hirons, especially the eye cream.
They are obsessed with Hanro underwear, describing it as stupidly expensive at about $50 (approximately £38) for a pair, but well made and long-lasting. They also love bags by the Row and Ikea shopping bags.
Regrets and Splurges
Van Ness's most regretted purchase is a house in Texas. They bought at the top of the market, and then real estate in Austin tanked. They said it taught them that sometimes the price you pay for impulsivity is years later.
Their biggest splurge is bags, a passion that stems from childhood when their mum let them carry one of her bags in secret when their dad wasn't around. This year, they bought themselves a black lizard Hermès Kelly Sellier from 1987, the year they were born, at Sotheby's. To convince their business manager, they had to sell seven bags so it did not come out of their income.
Gifts, Finds, and Scrimping
Van Ness's best present given was a hard-to-find twilly (narrow silk scarf) from Hermès, which they found after visiting 15 stores in 15 cities. The best present they received was a throw blanket made by their mum, though they are reluctant to use it because their five cats might damage it.
They scrimp on taxis, preferring to ride a bike or use public transport, including the tube and Lime bikes in London. For under £20, they recommend CeraVe body moisturiser, which helps with their psoriasis. For £200, they would choose fragrance from D'Orsay, specifically Vanilla Affair.
On eBay, their saved search is for a 50cm Hermès Kelly Relax bag, which their husband wants, ideally one that looks beaten up. They also buy Protein Pop-Tarts on repeat, noting they can't keep a box for more than two days, and Percy Pig Phizzy Pigtails, which Target now carries.
