BBC Radio 2 presenter Jo Whiley has announced the death of her father, Martin, in an emotional social media tribute. The radio star shared the news on Instagram on Tuesday evening, July 21, alongside pictures of her dad, who had been living with Parkinson's disease.
Tribute to her father
In her post, Whiley wrote: "My lovely Dad died today. He was the kindest man who lived solely to make others happy. He was supremely selfless and loved nothing more than caring for others and making people laugh."
She added: "I’ve had so many messages today saying that ‘Martin was a character’ and that sums him up completely. Everyone knew Martin Whiley - in the Pub, in his Village and at the school gates when he picked up my children (he was the BEST Manny EVER long before they became trendy)."
Love of music
Whiley credited her father for her love of music, recalling how he walked around a building site with a ghetto blaster. "His love for Elbow, Coldplay and Dido was unrivalled," she wrote.
She also described his challenging childhood, including being sent to a sanitarium for two years with TB and being raised by a family friend. "Meeting my Mum meant that Dad got a family of his own and finally got to experience love," she said.

The BBC Radio 2 Instagram account responded: "Sending you and your family lots of love Jo." Fellow DJ Annie Mac wrote: "Sending all my love to you and Frances and the kids Jo. xx," while Bob Harris added: "So sad to hear your news Jo. Stout heart. Massive love and a big hug."
Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver shared: "Bless you Jo I’m so sorry for the loss of your father sending loads love xxx." Singer Jason Donovan, who recently announced his own father's death, replied: "Jo and family. Sending so much love to you all!" Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway added: "Oh Jo - so so sorry for your loss - sending love."
Message from sister
Whiley also shared a message from her younger sister Frances, who has cri du chat syndrome. It read: "P.s. From Frances - thanks for the endless stories, night after night, all night long. We’re going to miss you so very much. You absolute legend."
