Jesy Nelson's Heartbreaking Sacrifice for Her Twins' Future Before Split
Jesy Nelson's Sacrifice for Twins Before Break-Up

Former Little Mix singer Jesy Nelson has opened up about the profound sacrifices she made for her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, before her recent separation from their father, Zion Foster. The 34-year-old star, who gave birth to the premature twins in May last year, has revealed a deeply personal journey marked by both hope and heartbreak.

A Mother's Sacrifice for a Peaceful Start

In a candid interview on Jamie Laing's Great Company podcast, Jesy Nelson disclosed that she and her then-partner, Zion Foster, made a significant lifestyle change before welcoming their daughters. The couple decided to relocate from their hometown of Romford to Cornwall, driven by a desire to provide their children with a serene and nurturing environment.

"Me and Zion decided we wanted to move to Cornwall because we just wanted our babies to just – we felt like they've been through all this trauma and we just wanted them to grow up in a peaceful setting and just to be around the sea and just live like a kid," Jesy explained. This move, however, came with its own challenges, placing her six hours away from her mother, Janice White, whose keen observations would later prove crucial.

The Diagnosis That Changed Everything

Jesy's twins, born prematurely at 31 weeks, have since been diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA Type 1), a genetic condition that affects muscle strength and movement. This diagnosis has propelled Jesy into advocacy, joining other parents to raise awareness and campaign for the NHS to introduce a simple heel prick test for early detection of SMA in newborns.

Reflecting on the early signs, Jesy recalled how her mother noticed something amiss during a visit. "She was looking at them in their little rockers and she said, 'Jesy they don't move their legs very much, have you noticed that?'" Jesy initially dismissed the concern, attributing it to their prematurity, but her mother's insistence led to further medical evaluation and the eventual diagnosis.

Navigating Trauma and a Relationship Breakdown

The strain of caring for twins with a serious health condition has taken a toll on Jesy's personal life. She recently confirmed her split from Zion Foster, her fiancé of four years, with whom she shares the twins. The couple had gotten engaged after welcoming their daughters, but the pressures of their situation ultimately led to their separation.

"We have been through such a traumatic experience and for us, our girls are our main priority and our main focus," Jesy stated. "We want to give them the most positive, happy and uplifting time and energy and because we have both been through such a traumatic experience, the energy wasn't right between us, which is understandable."

Despite the break-up, Jesy emphasised that she and Zion remain committed to co-parenting their daughters amicably. "We are still friends and we are still united in co-parenting our daughters, they are our main focus, that's all we can do, be the best possible parents we can right now," she added.

Looking Ahead: A Documentary and Continued Advocacy

Jesy's revelations come ahead of the release of her Prime Video documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix, scheduled for February 13. The film promises to delve deeper into her experiences as a mother and her journey beyond the pop group that made her famous.

Through her advocacy and personal openness, Jesy Nelson continues to shine a light on the realities of parenting children with SMA, while navigating the complexities of her own life with resilience and determination. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices parents make in the hope of a better future for their children.
